Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has been returned to Adiala prison after a medical examination at Shifa International Hospital, where doctors determined that he could safely continue his detention, Geo News reported.

Khan was taken to the Islamabad hospital from Adiala jail’s Gate No 1 under heightened security, with police escorting him to the facility.

The former prime minister was examined by a six-member team of specialist doctors after being taken to the hospital. Following the check-up, doctors determined that he could safely remain in prison.

Earlier, Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi had visited Shifa International Hospital with senior police officers to review security arrangements. A heavy police contingent was also deployed outside the hospital ahead of Khan’s arrival.

Special arrangements had been made at the hospital for Khan’s examination and possible admission, according to hospital sources. Jail sources said Khan was subsequently shifted to his cell at Adiala jail.

The Supreme Court had ordered Khan’s transfer to a medical facility within two days after considering his health condition. The government subsequently filed a review petition against the decision.

However, the Supreme Court registrar’s office returned the review petition on Thursday morning after raising certain objections.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has also raised the possibility of Khan being sent abroad for medical treatment.

Khan, 73, has remained in prison since August 2023 following convictions in several cases that he and his party describe as politically motivated. He has faced multiple legal proceedings since his ouster as prime minister in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote. – The News
