Historic Milestone: California Officially Recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha
In a historic victory for religious inclusion and civic representation, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 2017 (AB 2017) into law, officially designating Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state-recognized observances across California, says a Shura Council announcement. It adds:
This landmark legislation marks a major step forward, sending a clear and powerful message: California stands firmly with its Muslim community, affirming its values of equity, protection, and unity in the face of rising hostility.
This major achievement reflects months of dedicated advocacy and coalition-building:
- Legislative Leadership: Deepest gratitude to Assemblymember Matt Haney for authoring and championing AB 2017, and State Senator Aisha Wahab (now Congresswoman) for her vital leadership as co-author.
- Coalition Co-Sponsors: CAIR-CA was proud to co-sponsor this landmark legislation alongside the Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs (CAPIAA) and the Muslim Impact Council.
- Grassroots Advocacy: CAIR-CA’s policy team spearheaded community mobilization—driving calls, emails, and lobby meetings during Muslim Capital Day to ensure community voices were heard directly in Sacramento.
Shura Council celebrates this achievement that belongs to everyone who called, emailed, and advocated to turn this vision into reality. Together, we are building a more inclusive California.
