Super Bowl LX Will Not Lack Excitement

The National Football League (NFL) championship games are over. We now head to Super Bowl LX (Sixty) at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday February 8, 2026, without our home team, the San Francisco 49ers playing. This is a suitable time to reflect on the great season that they had despite the injuries. The Niners will no doubt be back next year in a big way. But now we must move on and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the teams that have made it to the big game, using the championship outcomes as a starting point.

In the American Football Conference (AFC) championship matchup on January 25 th, the New England Patriots edged out the Denver Broncos 10-7 in a game where a blizzard ended up winning a large part of the second half. The Broncos defense showed their ability to impact the Patriots powerhouse offense, but from what we witnessed, it was just not enough. The Broncos drew initial blood and scored a touchdown in the first quarter with the Patriots following with one in the second, tying the game 7-7 at the half. A field goal by the Patriots in the third quarter (the only score in the entire second half) decided the game. The weather got so bad that we who were watching TV in sunny California were sympathizing with everyone present in the stadium. And one last point: In this game. Denver was playing without its starting quarterback (Bo Nix) who was out due to an injury unfortunately at a critical time for the team.

The National Football Conference (NFC) championship game starting later that day between the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks was another story. A true contest with thirteen points scored in the first quarter, seventeen in the second, and a whopping twenty-eight points (four touchdowns) in the third quarter where the final score 31-27 was decided in favor of the Seahawks. The Seattle defense held on in the fourth quarter to win the day, but what was exciting to watch is that this formidable force was successfully penetrated by the Rams, especially in the third quarter, to the surprise of many who were expecting a much lower scoring game. Since the Seahawks had walked over the 49ers in the preceding playoff game, we were hoping that another California team, the LA Rams, would come out on top in this one. But not this time. Close, but no cigar!

Comparing these Super Bowl LX contenders, is no easy task, but let us start with the quarterbacks. Drake Maye of the Patriots, one of the youngest quarterbacks to ever start in a Super Bowl (he is only 23), has had a phenomenal year. In the 2025 NFL season Maye had 4,394 passing yards to his credit with a 72 percent completion rate. He is ranked fourth in quarterback yardage for the season with 258.5 yards per game. But Sam Darnold of the Seahawks is not far behind and is ranked fifth in the same category with 4,048 passing yards in the 2025 season with a 67.7 percent completion rate and 238.1 yards per game. The Patriots have a slight edge here, but quarterback experience favors the Seahawks. The outcome of the game will also depend on how much time each team’s offensive line can provide their quarterbacks to throw the ball.

Now we look at each team’s defense because it is widely believed that most football games are won in this realm. The Seattle Seahawks have been ranked first in defense for the 2025 NFL season, and we sure know their capabilities after their trouncing of San Francisco (41-6) in the recent playoff game. They only allowed an average of 17.2 points per game against them during the season, the lowest of any team and had the highest number of sacks at 47. To compare, the New England Patriots ranked fourth in defense for the season allowing an average of 18.8 yards per game with thirty-five sacks. The Seattle defense has consistently proved its worth and remains one of the primary reasons why they are in Super Bowl.

Granted that this is a very high-level comparison of the two teams and does not convincingly determine who will be raising the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the conclusion of this super bowl. But if a prediction of the winner is to be made, the tea leaves indicate an exciting game with an outcome not in favor of the Patriots! A combination of a strong defense and an offensive show led by Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba should be able to win Super Bowl LX for the Seahawks.
