Shura Council Mourns the Passing of Dr Atiq Sidiqi
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un
The Shura Council of Southern California, together with the broader Muslim community of Southern California, mourns the passing of Dr Atiq Sidiqi—a visionary leader, devoted community servant, and one of the founding pillars of our collective institutions.
Dr Siddiqi was among the founders of the Shura Council, and his signature stands on its very first bylaws. Long before the Shura Council came into being, he led the United Islamic Centers of Southern California, helping to unify and organize our growing community. He was also a founding figure of Masjid Qurtuba and a pioneer of Masjid Duarte. He played a historic role in initiating Independence Day celebrations for Muslims in Los Angeles, fostering civic engagement and pride among American Muslims.
Even during illness, Dr Sidiqi continued to grace our mosques—especially during Ramadan—with his presence, prayers, and sincere duas. Those who knew him remember his humility, warmth, and unwavering commitment to serving Allah through service to people.
We pray that Allah سبحانه وتعالى forgives him, showers him with His mercy, accepts his many good deeds, and grants him Jannat al-Firdous. May Allah grant patience and strength to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. - Shura Council of Southern California
