Embassy Official and Pakistani Students Explore Beijing’s Rich Heritage on Youth Exchange Tour

Over 20 Pakistani students participated in a day-long heritage tour in Beijing to strengthen cultural ties and mutual understanding between China and other countries. The event was part of China’s larger youth exchange initiative, which aims to connect young people from all over the world and promote global harmony through shared cultural experiences. Following the visit to Longfu Temple, the group proceeded to the Bell and Drum Towers, which sit proudly along Beijing’s Central Axis. The Bell Tower, originally built in the 13th century, was used to signal time to the citizens of Beijing in the old days. It was an important part of the city’s daily life, marking the rhythm of ancient Beijing’s existence. The Drum Tower, located nearby, also served as a timekeeping instrument, but it was equally important for its role in alerting the city to emergencies, such as fires and invasions. Next on the agenda was a visit to the Beijing Enamel Factory, which is famous for producing Jingtailan, a unique form of cloisonné enamelware. This remarkable craft is considered a national-level intangible cultural heritage of China, recognised for its intricate craftsmanship and historical significance. Students had the opportunity to witness the detailed process behind the creation of cloisonné enamelware, from the formation of delicate wire outlines to the careful application of enamel that gives the pieces their vibrant and lasting colours.
The visit allowed participants to explore one of the finest examples of traditional Chinese artistry. Cloisonné has a rich history in Beijing, with the craft having been perfected over centuries. Today, the Beijing Enamel Factory continues to be a hub of cultural preservation, keeping this ancient art form alive for future generations. By engaging with the artisans and observing the manufacturing techniques, the students deepened their understanding of Chinese craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
