Winter Sports Festival Begins in Bumburet Valley
Chitral: Snow-draped landscapes of the Kalash valleys were transformed into a vibrant arena of heritage and athleticism as the two-day Indigenous Winter Sports Festival kicked off at the scenic Sheikhandeh grounds in Bumburet on Monday.
Organised by the Lower Chitral district administration, the gala serves as a powerful showcase of the region’s unique cultural identity and its potential as a premier winter tourism destination.
The festival features a riveting lineup of traditional sports that have been passed down through generations and have not lost their appeal. Spectators were treated to the high-energy spectacle of Buzkashi, alongside local favourites such as Him Ghal (snow golf), and traditional wrestling.
Local athletes, skilled in these ancient disciplines, demonstrated remarkable prowess, offering both locals and tourists a rare glimpse of the ancestral sporting culture of the Hindukush.
“Our primary goal is to engage the youth in healthy, constructive activities while ensuring our ancient traditions remain a living part of our society,” said additional assistant commissioner Mohammad Isa Khan.
“By celebrating these games, we are not just preserving history; we are stimulating the local economy and inviting the world to witness the hospitality of the Kalash people,” he said.
The administration said comprehensive arrangements, including a dedicated stage, spectator seating, and a robust security and traffic management plan, were finalised prior to the event to ensure a seamless experience for the large crowds.
The influx of visitors is expected to provide a significant boost to local businesses. - Dawn
