Dallas, TX: In a remarkable display of purpose, unity, and leadership, the 48th Annual Convention of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) unfolded from July 9 to 13, 2025, at the iconic Hilton Anatole in Dallas. What transpired was not merely a medical convention — it was a profound affirmation of Pakistani American excellence, cultural heritage, and collective responsibility in a world undergoing rapid transformation.

More than 4,000 physicians, healthcare professionals, students, community leaders, and dignitaries from across the United States, Canada, Pakistan, and beyond converged under one roof, reaffirming APPNA’s enduring role as a pillar of professional distinction and community service. The atmosphere was electric, the programming meticulously curated, and the impact far-reaching.

A Convention Reimagined

From its very outset, the 48th Convention distinguished itself with unprecedented energy. Led by APPNA President Dr. Humeraa Qamar and the entire APPNA Board of Directors 2025, the event broke records in attendance and membership engagement.

APPNA 2025 Board of Directors:

  • President: Dr. Humeraa Qamar
  • President-Elect: Dr. Babar Rao
  • Immediate Past President: Dr. Asif Mohiuddin
  • Secretary: Dr. Muhammad Sanaullah
  • Treasurer: Dr. Furrukh Malik
  • Board of Directors (2024–2025): Dr. Sajid Mehmood
  • Board of Directors (2025–2026): Dr. Mujtaba Qazi, Dr. Arman Raza, Dr. Muhammad Aslam

The success of the convention was due in no small part to the tireless efforts of the Host Committee, led by Chair Dr. Tariq Mahmood and Co-Chair Dr. Fazal Akbar Ali, whose attention to detail, hospitality, and seamless coordination were evident at every stage of the five-day experience. Their leadership ensured not only logistical excellence but also an atmosphere of warmth and inclusiveness that defined the spirit of this year’s gathering.

In a bold and strategic shift, APPNA opted this year to stay above partisan politics — a move that not only resonated with attendees but reaffirmed the organization's credibility and moral clarity. Dr. Qamar’s vision of a “physician-first” convention brought the focus squarely back to science, service, and community.

A special membership drive offering discounted rates brought in a surge of new ansd returning members, symbolizing a revitalized and expanded APPNA family.

Knowledge, Culture, and Collaboration

The convention featured a powerful lineup of Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, scientific panels, healthcare innovation expos, and discussions on mental health, telemedicine, and public health challenges. But APPNA 2025 was far more than a clinical assembly — it was a cultural and humanistic celebration.

Night after night, the Anatole ballroom transformed into a stage of artistic grandeur. Performances by Ustaad Hamid Ali Khan, Arif Lohar, Sanam Marvi, and Atif Aslam stirred the soul and reminded the diaspora of the richness of Pakistani musical heritage. Audiences were treated to a dazzling spectrum of traditional, folk, and contemporary music - creating unforgettable memories.

One of the literary highlights of the convention was a soul-stirring Mushaira, where celebrated poets from across North America and Pakistan gathered to share their verses. The Mushaira evoked nostalgia, pride, and reflection among attendees, many of whom found themselves transported back to the poetic roots of Pakistan’s cultural identity. The evening served not only as a tribute to Urdu literature but as a testament to APPNA’s commitment to celebrating intellectual and cultural excellence alongside medical achievement.

The APPNA Bazaar added more energy with vibrant colors, crafts, jewelry, fashion, and the irresistible aroma of homeland cuisine. “APPNA Got Talent” gave the physicians themselves a platform to showcase hidden artistic dimensions — be it poetry, comedy, or song.

Honoring Leadership and Philanthropy

A defining moment of the convention was the appearance of His Excellency Rizwan Saeed Shaikh, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States. Ambassador Shaikh’s presence energized the audience and underscored APPNA’s vital role in shaping the narrative of Pakistan in the global arena. His remarks emphasized the strength of the Pakistani diaspora and the importance of continued engagement between physicians abroad and the healthcare system in Pakistan.

Equally noteworthy was the generous and inspiring participation of renowned businessman and philanthropist Syed Javed Anwar, who contributed an extraordinary $100,000 donation toward APPNA’s humanitarian initiatives. His gesture stood as a shining example of how successful overseas Pakistanis can reinvest in community uplift and transnational goodwill. Mr. Anwar’s support not only elevated the event’s prestige but added tangible momentum to APPNA’s ongoing charitable projects.

During the Grand Dinner, several individuals were acknowledged for their contributions to the community and media. Among them was Sultana Siddiqui of HUM Network, recognized for her past association with medical outreach efforts. However, the spotlight remained squarely on those whose efforts continue to directly benefit Pakistani American physicians and institutions aligned with this mission.

Women Lead the Way

In what may be one of APPNA’s proudest boasts, the leadership of Dr. Humeraa Qamar added to a growing legacy of female presidents - a testament to the organization’s genuine embrace of gender equality. APPNA’s commitment to empowering women in medicine and leadership stands in stark contrast to regressive attitudes still prevalent in parts of society. This year’s convention made it clear: the Pakistani American woman is not just participating — she is leading.

Serving the Present, Building the Future

APPNA’s relevance goes far beyond its U.S. base. For over four decades, the organization has supported Pakistani medical graduates with U.S. residencies, mentorships, and scholarships. At the convention, that legacy continued, with updates on its robust support programs and heartfelt testimonials from young physicians whose careers were launched through APPNA’s network.

Healthcare initiatives from organizations like Shifa Foundation USA, Pak-American Health Network, and Indus Hospital’s U.S. chapter were highlighted in collaborative sessions, showing how diaspora physicians are not only healing abroad — they are healing back home.

A Homecoming of Spirit

If there was one recurring theme throughout the five days, it was this: belonging. Whether a physician who arrived in America in the 1980s or a medical student navigating their way through the U.S. system today, everyone felt they were part of a shared story — a story that began in Pakistan, but found new chapters in New York, Houston, and Los Angeles.

What APPNA offers is not just professional networking; it offers an emotional and cultural sanctuary. It offers a vision of how diaspora communities can remain rooted in their heritage while scaling the heights of global impact.

Looking Ahead

As the final sessions concluded and attendees began their farewells, one thing was clear: APPNA’s 48th Annual Convention had done more than celebrate the past — it had cast a bold light on the future. A future where unity supersedes division, where purpose trumps politics, and where the best of Pakistan continues to thrive in the hearts and minds of those who have made America their home.

In the hallways of Hilton Anatole this July, one didn’t just hear the conversations of doctors and diplomats — one heard the heartbeat of a global community recommitting itself to healing, helping, and honoring its roots.

And that, in every sense, is the APPNA legacy. And it is only just getting stronger.
