Dr Adnan Hyder Appointed Dean of Boston University School of Public Health

In a landmark appointment, well-known physician and scholar Dr Adnan Hyder has been named the next dean of Boston University’s School of Public Health (SPH). The announcement was made by BU President Melissa Gilliam and Provost Gloria Waters on July 21, following a rigorous national search. Dr Hyder will assume his new role as the Robert A. Knox Professor and dean in fall 2025, officially beginning on August 15.

Dr Hyder brings with him more than 25 years of experience in global health, having led pioneering work across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Currently serving as the senior associate dean for research and innovation at The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, he has built a reputation as one of the world’s foremost experts on health systems, noncommunicable diseases, and the socio-economic drivers of illness in low- and middle-income countries.

His research, often supported by the National Institutes of Health, has focused on the burden and risk factors of injuries and chronic diseases worldwide. He also leads the United States' first academic center focused on commercial determinants of health.

Previously, Dr Hyder spent two decades at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he directed the health systems program and was a leading figure in global bioethics.

A graduate of Aga Khan University in Pakistan, Dr Hyder earned both his MPH and PhD from Johns Hopkins University.

“This school’s mission of social justice deeply resonates with me,” said Dr Hyder. “BU’s School of Public Health has grown impressively while staying true to its roots—I’m honored to lead such a committed community.”

Dr Hyder succeeds outgoing dean Sandro Galea. Michael Stein has served as interim dean since Galea’s departure. - The Friday Times
