COPAA Welcomes Reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry

 

COPAA has supported the decision of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani in reinstating Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and others “according to the promise made by me and the president." A press release issued by the Council stated:
“COPAA believes this action will bring credibility and authority to institutions in Pakistan, and bring in a period of constructive changes within Pakistan. COPAA requests the lawmakers to make an amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan to reflect the independence of the judiciary and the media.
“We ask President Zardari to lift Governor rule in Punjab. Let the democratically elected members of Punjab Assembly vote for their leader and move the country forward.

"In a statement issued by the US Embassy in Islamabad, Washington called for ‘all Pakistanis and their political representatives to work together, with the support of their friends and allies. To peacefully strengthen their democracy and ensure a positive dialogue as they move forward to deal with the many issues confronting them.’ “
