Berkeley,
CA: An attack occurred Thursday night on the life of Ameena
Saeed, wife of Dr. Agha Saeed, chairman of the American Muslim
Alliance (AMA) and the Muslim Taskforce (AMT), while she was
driving from Berkeley to Fremont in the San Francisco Bay
area.
No one was injured. Police were called and an investigation
is underway.
Ameena Saeed, a sociologist, who teaches at the Vista College
in Berkeley, was driving her car on the University Avenue
near the freeway entrance when a bullet hit the rear passenger
seat window and a brown car with several passengers sped away.
Ameena Saeed and her husband Agha Saeed who teaches at University
of California, Berkeley, as well as California State University-East
Bay, said the attack may be motivated by hatred for the values
and political views held by their family.
“We don’t know who was behind this attack but
regardless it has only reinforced our dedication to civil
liberties and freedom of thought and conscience”, says
Ameena Saeed. “If anyone was trying to intimidate us
then they have clearly failed. This incident has further solidified
our commitment to peace and justice for all particularly the
Palestinians. We will continue to oppose war and occupation,"
Dr. Agha Saeed said.
The AMA is a Muslim political organizational with 101 chapters
nationwide. The AMA is also a founding member of the California
Civil Rights Alliance (CCRA) an umbrella organization that
includes 25 mainstream groups.
The AMT, headquartered in the Bay Area, is the umbrella organization
for ten of the largest national American Muslim organizations.
It champions the restoration of civil liberties and human
rights for the Muslim community — both of which have
been severely curtailed under the Patriot Act following the
9/11 attacks.
