Role of Immigrants

CA: California State Controller Steve Westly’s brief
but scintillating address at the reception hosted in his
honor by Dr. Khalid and Dr. Parveen Ahmed on February 23
2005 at their Whittier residence sounded music to the ears.

Buoyant
and upbeat, the Democrat bred optimism and hope as he spiritedly
dwelt on the important role of the immigrant community in
the development of the US in general, and California, in
particular.
“The immigrants make this State and country successful,”
he observed. Their contribution in bolstering the economy
is unquestionable and they must know that their sustained
strivings are duly applauded.
Mr. Westly appeared both energetic and zestful as he talked
of being “passionate about the development of the
economy of California.” “We are the envy of
the world,” he proudly claimed as he described his
plans “to lead the state into the future.”

“I want to fix things and make the State run better,”
he stated.
Enterprise and hard work are the key to success. In California
if you are an entrepreneur and inclined to take risks it
takes just one generation to make your debut in the elite
class of multi-millionaires, he stated.
The State Controller appeared cognizant of the fact that
the enactment of the Patriot Act has been a cause of worry
for many immigrants. “People like me say it is un-American
and must change,” he remarked. “The

Patriot
Act is a federal issue but we are the sixth largest economy
in the world. If we stand up we will have an effect,”
he reassured the audience comprising eminent community figures
and medical doctors. “We changed history in the past.
We are changing the political dynamics (today),” the
State Controller remarked to the applause of the gleeful
audience.
Mr. Westly describe the host, Dr. Khalid, a “most
inspiring person, a role model.”
Earlier, welcoming the chief guest, Safan Ahmad, son of
Dr Khalid and Dr. Parveen Ahmed, described Mr. Westly as
“a unique person who understands Pakistan’s
needs and desires.” He added the State Controller’s
background “makes him an ideal person to deal with
the financial problems of California.”
